Collision Tumors and Malignant Neoplasm Interactions
Summary
Collision tumours represent the arising of two or more histologically distinct neoplasms within a single anatomical site, each maintaining separate clonal identities without intermingling. While often incidental, these juxtapositions reveal important insights into how different malignant cells can co-exist, compete for resources and influence one another’s growth through local microenvironmental factors. Interaction between malignant neoplasms may involve paracrine signalling, shared stromal responses and differential recruitment of immune cells, all of which can affect diagnostic accuracy, staging and therapeutic response. Clinically, collision tumours have been identified in cutaneous, gastrointestinal and gynaecological sites, emphasising the need for thorough histopathological and molecular assessment. Recognition of these complex presentations is vital for precise surgical planning, prognostic estimation and development of combined treatment strategies that address each neoplastic component.
