Community Currencies and Local Economic Systems

Community currencies are monetary instruments issued and managed at a local or regional level, circulating alongside national legal tender to foster economic resilience, social cohesion and environmental sustainability. They encompass time-based credits, barter networks and alternative tokens designed to strengthen local supply chains, retain wealth within a community and support socially or ecologically desirable activities. By encouraging exchanges among participants who share a geographical or interest-based affiliation, these systems generate a local multiplier effect, boost demand for small and medium-sized enterprises and build networks of mutual aid. Over the past decade, advances in digital platforms and governance models have diversified currency designs, enabling automated accounting, peer-to-peer trust mechanisms and integration with broader solidarity-economy initiatives. Practical applications range from rural complementary money schemes that underwrite local development projects to urban time banks addressing social care needs, all of which contribute to more inclusive, place-based economic circulations.

Time bank: A system in which individuals exchange services measured in time units, valuing all participants’ labour equally and fostering reciprocal support networks.

Local multiplier effect: The process by which money spent within a community induces subsequent rounds of local spending, amplifying the overall economic impact.
