Community Pharmacists' Role in Oral Health Promotion

Community pharmacists occupy a pivotal position at the intersection of medicine and public health, offering accessible advice, early detection and prevention strategies for oral disease. As front‐line healthcare providers, they frequently encounter patients with oral pain, ulcerations, dry mouth and denture‐related issues, often in regions with limited access to dental services. Pharmacists can educate on oral hygiene, recommend appropriate topical agents, guide use of antimicrobial rinses and advise on risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol use. They also play a key role in recognising warning signs—so-called red flag symptoms—of serious conditions like oral cancer or infection. By establishing clear referral pathways to dental practitioners and integrating into multidisciplinary care teams, community pharmacists can enhance early intervention, reduce treatment delays and contribute to broader public health initiatives such as antimicrobial stewardship. Despite willingness to counsel on oral health, many pharmacists report gaps in training and confidence, highlighting the need for tailored continuing professional development and incorporation of oral health modules into pharmacy curricula.
