Summary
Comorbidity, the coexistence of additional medical conditions alongside a primary cognitive disorder, profoundly shapes the onset, progression and management of conditions such as dementia and other cognitive impairments. In ageing populations, multimorbidity is commonplace and often includes vascular risk factors (for example hypertension and diabetes), psychiatric disorders and sensory impairments. The presence of multiple chronic diseases influences diagnostic accuracy, accelerates functional deterioration, increases dependency on formal and informal carers, and drives greater utilisation of healthcare services.
