Compensatory Health Beliefs in Sustainable Behavior
Summary
Compensatory health beliefs refer to the conviction that an environmentally unfriendly action can be balanced or offset by a subsequent pro-environmental behaviour. In sustainable contexts, such beliefs may lead individuals to feel licensed to engage in harmful activities—such as driving a petrol car or consuming high-carbon foods—if they later perform a greener action, for example recycling or choosing an eco-labelled product. Cognitive mechanisms underpinning these beliefs include an averaging bias, whereby people intuitively average the “good” and “bad” rather than summing their impacts, and the negative footprint illusion, in which adding green options to a conventional set paradoxically lowers perceived total harm. Such compensatory thinking contributes to rebound effects, undermines policy interventions, and may exacerbate overall environmental damage despite good intentions. Understanding the formation, stability and situational triggers of compensatory health beliefs is therefore critical to designing interventions that promote genuine behaviour change and curb unsustainable practices on a global scale.
