Congenital Heart Disease Management in Canine Patients

Summary

Congenital heart disease in dogs encompasses a diverse array of structural cardiac anomalies present at birth, including septal defects, valvular stenoses and complex outflow tract malformations. Clinical signs vary from asymptomatic murmurs detected on routine examination to exercise intolerance, syncope and right or left-sided congestive failure. Early and accurate diagnosis relies on careful auscultation supplemented by echocardiography, Doppler assessment and, where indicated, advanced imaging such as computed tomography or magnetic resonance. Therapeutic approaches range from medical management—using diuretics, vasodilators and antiarrhythmics to stabilise haemodynamics—to minimally invasive interventional techniques. Transcatheter occlusion of patent ductus arteriosus and balloon valvuloplasty for pulmonic stenosis are now standard in many referral centres, offering reduced procedural morbidity. Selected patients with complex anomalies may require open surgical correction under cardiopulmonary bypass. Concurrently, genetic screening and targeted breeding programmes for subvalvular aortic stenosis and other heritable defects aim to reduce disease prevalence and improve long-term outcomes.
