Conservation and Biology of Sturgeon Species

Sturgeons represent an ancient lineage of anadromous fishes renowned for their exceptional longevity, late sexual maturity and vital role in both freshwater and marine ecosystems. Across Eurasia and North America, overfishing, river regulation and habitat fragmentation have driven most species to critically low levels, with several listed under international or national endangered‐species legislation. Global initiatives emphasise collaboration among governments, non‐governmental bodies and local communities to safeguard remaining populations, restore river continuity and mitigate bycatch.
