Summary
The franciscana dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei) is a small coastal cetacean endemic to the western South Atlantic, inhabiting shallow bays, estuaries and coastal waters from southern Brazil to northern Argentina. Characterised by low reproductive rates, short life span and a restricted distribution, this species faces acute vulnerability to human activities. The principal threat is bycatch in gillnet fisheries, which has driven mortality rates well above sustainable limits throughout its range. Habitat degradation, encompassing noise and chemical pollution, as well as depletion of prey stocks and climate‐mediated shifts in coastal ecosystems, further imperil population viability. Conservation efforts have delineated multiple management units based on genetic, morphological and demographic data, and have applied potential biological removal (PBR) frameworks to gauge sustainable mortality thresholds. Despite regional fisheries regulations and spatial protection measures, compliance remains uneven and bycatch continues to exceed sustainable limits in most areas. Advances in population monitoring, ranging behaviour studies and threat‐mitigation technologies have informed adaptive management, yet coordinated international action and rigorous enforcement are essential to avert further declines and secure the long‐term persistence of franciscana dolphins.
