Conservation Ecology of Endangered Cockatoos

Summary

Endangered cockatoos, chiefly members of the family Cacatuidae such as Carnaby’s, Baudin’s and yellow-crested cockatoos, occupy specialised niches across Australasia and Southeast Asia. These species face a suite of anthropogenic pressures, including the loss and fragmentation of native woodlands, alteration of food resources by land‐use change and emerging threats from climate variability. Their reliance on tree hollows for nesting, seasonal fluctuations in seed availability and long‐distance movements to exploit patchy resources make them sensitive indicators of ecosystem health. Conservation ecology in this context integrates studies of foraging behaviour, breeding success, movement dynamics and genetic connectivity to inform habitat restoration, artificial nesting provision and adaptive management. Community engagement and citizen science have proven invaluable for long-term monitoring, while technological advances in telemetry and accelerometry are refining our understanding of energy budgets and spatial requirements. Effective strategies combine protection of remnant vegetation, establishment of food plant corridors, installation of artificial nest hollows and careful management of anthropogenic food sources. By bridging physiological ecology, landscape‐scale planning and socio‐ecological collaboration, conservation initiatives seek not only to stabilise declining populations but also to restore functional ecological processes on a regional and global scale.
