Conservation Ecology of the Cape Floristic Region
Summary
The Cape Floristic Region (CFR) represents one of the world’s richest temperate plant biodiversity hotspots, dominated by fire-adapted fynbos shrublands and fragmented renosterveld grass–shrub mosaics. Its exceptional endemism arises from millennia of climatic stability, complex topography and nutrient-poor soils that have driven rapid speciation. However, aggressive agricultural conversion, urban expansion, invasive alien plants and altered fire regimes have reduced natural cover to under 20% of its original extent, with many habitats now confined to small, isolated patches. Conservation ecology in the CFR therefore seeks to understand patterns of species persistence and ecosystem functioning across fragmented landscapes, to design effective reserve networks, and to integrate private-land stewardship. Key strategies include high-resolution habitat mapping, restoration of degraded fragments through seedbank assessment and planting of indigenous taxa, the use of ecosystem-service valuation to motivate retention of natural remnants on farmland, and adaptive fire management to maintain ecological processes. Research on genetic connectivity, species’ local adaptation and the dynamics of soil-faunal communities underpins many restoration efforts. The CFR’s global significance lies not only in its unique biota, but also in serving as a model for conserving hyper-diverse systems under intense anthropogenic pressure.

Local adaptation: Evolutionary adjustment of populations to the specific environmental conditions of their locality, enhancing fitness.
