Corporate Social Responsibility and Firm Performance Metrics
Summary
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) encompasses voluntary corporate initiatives that extend beyond statutory obligations to address social, environmental and ethical concerns. Firms adopt CSR strategies to manage stakeholder expectations, enhance reputation and mitigate risks, with the underlying premise that positive social and environmental engagement can yield financial benefits. Performance metrics in this domain fall into two broad categories: accounting‐based measures, such as return on assets and profit margins; and market‐based measures, such as Tobin’s Q and stock returns. Embedded within these are sustainability indicators, notably environmental, social and governance (ESG) ratings, which aggregate firm disclosures and third‐party assessments into composite scores. Recent methodological advances have introduced standardised disclosure frameworks and econometric techniques to isolate causal effects of CSR on firm outcomes. Practically, multinational corporations leverage integrated reporting to align financial and non‐financial performance, while investors increasingly incorporate ESG criteria into capital allocation decisions. The evolving body of research reflects a global perspective, examining contexts from developed capital markets to emerging economies and highlighting the interplay between corporate governance, stakeholder engagement and long‐term value creation.
