Recent work using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis on over 150 countries identifies five distinct configurations that yield strong environmental performance and four that lead to weak outcomes. Absence of corruption emerges as a critical condition in several high-performance scenarios, often in combination with high per-capita income, urbanisation and protection of individual freedoms. Conversely, combinations involving elevated corruption and low economic development consistently produce poor scores on the Environmental Performance Index.
An analysis of 123 countries over 2000–2017 finds a robust negative relationship between corruption levels and green growth. Employing panel estimators to account for country-specific effects and potential endogeneity, the study shows that even small increases in corruption correspond to significant losses in green economic gains, underscoring the universal importance of corruption control for sustainable development.
In an African context, interaction-effect research using Method of Moments Quantile Regression reveals that, while both rising income and improved corruption control independently tend to raise CO₂ emissions, their joint effect mitigates emissions growth. This finding suggests that income thresholds can alter the efficacy of anti-corruption measures, implying that sequencing of governance and economic policies is vital for environmental quality in emerging economies.
