Urban design and street‐network configuration influence spatial distributions of offences, while collective efficacy, neighbourhood trust and local policing strategies modulate crime trajectories over time. Recent advances integrate computational methods—machine learning, network analysis and time‐series modelling—to predict crime hot spots, assess policy interventions and disentangle causal influences. Global events such as pandemics have further underscored how alterations in human mobility and social distancing measures can rapidly reshape offence patterns, revealing both the resilience and fragility of community safety systems.

A comprehensive global study examined how stay-at-home restrictions affected urban crime in 27 cities across four continents. Using interrupted time-series analyses and meta-regression, researchers found that more stringent limits on public movement were linked to larger declines in robbery and theft, though the magnitude and duration of reductions varied markedly by city and offence type. This work illuminates the causal relationship between mobility curbs and crime rates, highlighting the value of comparative data to inform adaptive policing and public‐health policy under sudden social upheaval.
