Cross-cultural dynamics and national values encompass the ways in which deeply held beliefs, norms and priorities shape interactions within and between societies. At the heart of this field lies the effort to map, measure and compare value systems—ranging from individualism and collectivism to universalism and particularism—and to understand how they influence political behaviour, economic exchange and social cohesion. Research has established that national values both reflect and reinforce institutional frameworks: they guide public policy on issues such as climate action or gender equity and inform business strategies in global markets. Over the past decade, scholars have refined theoretical models to capture the fluid interplay between subjective culture (people’s attitudes and self-reported values) and objective culture (observed patterns of behaviour and social indicators). Advances in data-science methods now enable more nuanced, multidimensional maps of cultural difference, revealing how national value configurations adapt in the face of migration, technological change and transnational challenges.
