Cultural Competence in Nursing Education and Practice

Cultural competence in nursing refers to the capacity of practitioners and students to deliver care that recognises, respects and integrates patients’ diverse cultural backgrounds. This competence encompasses cognitive, affective and behavioural dimensions, including self‐awareness, cultural knowledge, empathy, communication skills and critical reflection. In education, curricula have increasingly incorporated transcultural nursing content through dedicated modules, simulation with diverse patient scenarios and experiential placements. These approaches draw on models such as Campinha-Bacote’s Process of Cultural Competence and Purnell’s Model for Cultural Competence, promoting lifelong learning and adaptation. In clinical practice, culturally competent nurses demonstrate enhanced patient engagement, improved adherence to treatment plans and reduced disparities in health outcomes. Particular attention has been paid to critical care settings, where rapid decision-making and family involvement demand heightened sensitivity to cultural norms. The global rise in migration and demographic shifts underscores the urgency of integrating cultural competence into both education and practice, fostering equitable health care across diverse populations.
