Cultural Competence Training in Healthcare Education

Training in cultural competence aims to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to deliver effective care across diverse sociocultural contexts. It encompasses structured curricula, experiential learning, reflective practice and assessments designed to increase cross-cultural awareness, mitigate implicit bias and foster patient-centred communication. Educational strategies vary from stand-alone workshops and simulation exercises to longitudinal integration in degree programmes, often drawing on theories of intercultural communication, adult learning and social cognition. Global trends highlight an imperative to reduce health disparities by enhancing institutional and individual responsiveness to cultural, linguistic and socioeconomic differences. Best-practice models emphasise the co-creation of curricula with community stakeholders, incorporation of intersectional perspectives and evaluation frameworks that measure changes not only in practitioner self-efficacy but also in patient care outcomes. Despite growing uptake, challenges remain in standardising competencies, assessing long-term behavioural change and embedding training sustainably within complex health systems.
