Summary

Demographic transition describes the historical shift from high mortality and fertility rates to low mortality and fertility rates, fundamentally altering the size and age composition of populations. This process unfolds in sequential stages, each carrying distinct economic implications. In early phases, declining mortality expands the working-age cohort, reducing dependency ratios and providing a window of opportunity for accelerated growth. As fertility falls, this “demographic dividend” can bolster per capita income through expanded labour supply, higher savings and increased investment in education and health.
