Fertility patterns during and after the transition have been influenced by family strategies for birth spacing and stopping, responses to child survival prospects, and shifts in social norms and institutions governing marriage and reproduction. Comparative analyses of European, Asian and settler-society data sets reveal both common pathways—such as the role of declining child mortality in promoting smaller family sizes—and regional specificities, including the timing of parity-dependence and the impact of short-term economic stress. Understanding these patterns offers insights into the interplay between mortality decline, resource allocation within families and the emergence of deliberate fertility control, with enduring relevance for contemporary population policy and health planning.

Recent studies have applied mathematical modelling to show that the twentieth-century decline in childhood mortality not only reduced fertility but also indirectly increased maternal longevity by alleviating bereavement-related health risks.
