Determinants of Firm Profitability and Performance Analysis
Summary
The profitability and overall performance of firms are shaped by an intricate interplay of internal characteristics, industry dynamics and external economic forces. Firm‐specific determinants include size, age, managerial efficiency, capital structure and corporate governance arrangements, each exerting direct influence on profitability ratios such as return on assets and equity. Industry‐specific factors, including market concentration, competitive intensity and technological dynamism, further mould performance outcomes by affecting cost structures and pricing power. At a broader level, macroeconomic conditions – notably GDP growth, inflation and interest rates – set the prevailing business environment and can amplify or mitigate firm‐level effects. Recent methodological advances have employed dynamic panel models, classical regression and decomposition techniques to capture time‐lagged effects, address endogeneity and unravel the contributions of each determinant over both short and long horizons. Together, these insights form a coherent framework for forecasting firm performance, guiding investment decisions and informing policy interventions aimed at enhancing corporate resilience and sustainable growth.
