Diabetes Risk Assessment Tools and Prevention Strategies

Summary

Diabetes risk assessment integrates non-invasive scoring systems, biochemical measurements and digital platforms to identify individuals at heightened risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and prediabetes. Common tools include questionnaire-based scores—most prominently the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC)—and point-of-care glycaemic tests such as glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and fasting plasma glucose. Beyond individual screening, large-scale eHealth campaigns and mobile applications facilitate self-assessment and linkage to professional evaluation. Prevention strategies span lifestyle modification programmes, culturally tailored community interventions and policy-driven public-health initiatives. Emphasis has shifted towards combining risk stratification with cost-effective behavioural nudges, thus optimising early detection and promoting sustained dietary changes, increased physical activity and weight management.

Diabetes Risk Assessment Tools and Prevention Strategies publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in diabetes risk assessment tools and prevention strategies across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC): An eight-item questionnaire estimating 10-year risk of developing T2DM based on age, body mass index, waist circumference, physical activity, diet, blood pressure treatment, hyperglycaemia history and family history.

Glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c): A biomarker reflecting average blood glucose levels over the preceding two to three months, used both for diagnosis and monitoring of diabetes.

Prediabetes: A state of impaired fasting glucose or impaired glucose tolerance in which blood glucose is elevated above normal but below diabetes thresholds.

eHealth: The use of information and communication technologies to support health services, including online risk calculators and mobile health applications for self-assessment and decision support.
