Summary
Diabetic foot complications represent a major cause of morbidity and health‐care expenditure worldwide. Effective education and self-management are pivotal in preventing foot ulcers, infections and amputations. Comprehensive programmes combine patient-centred teaching on daily foot inspection, appropriate footwear selection, skin and nail care, and early recognition of warning signs with strategies to optimise glycaemic control and cardiovascular risk factors. Interdisciplinary teams—including nurses, podiatrists and diabetes educators—tailor content to individual risk profiles, cultural contexts and literacy levels. Behavioural support techniques, such as goal-setting, problem-solving and self-monitoring, reinforce learning and foster sustained adherence. Practical demonstrations and hands-on skills training encourage patients to integrate foot‐care routines into daily life. Overall, education empowers individuals with diabetes to assume responsibility for foot health, reduces the incidence of ulceration and contributes to improved quality of life.

Diabetic foot ulcer: A break in the skin on the foot of a person with diabetes, often due to neuropathy and poor circulation, that can become chronically infected.

Self-efficacy: An individual’s belief in their capacity to execute behaviours necessary to manage health tasks effectively.
COM-B model: A theoretical framework positing that behaviour change arises from interactions between capability, opportunity and motivation.
Risk stratification: The process of categorising patients according to their likelihood of developing foot complications to guide intensity of monitoring and intervention.
