Diabetic Foot Disease Management and Outcomes
Summary
Diabetic foot disease encompasses a spectrum of lower-limb complications arising from chronic hyperglycaemia, in which peripheral neuropathy and peripheral arterial disease converge to compromise sensation and blood supply. As a result, trivial trauma may progress to non-healing ulcers, infection and, in severe cases, limb amputation. Effective management combines primary prevention through patient education and regular foot screening with targeted interventions such as revascularisation, advanced wound dressings and pharmacological modulation of inflammation and oxidative stress. Multidisciplinary collaboration between endocrinologists, vascular surgeons, podiatrists and rehabilitation specialists has been shown to improve healing rates and reduce amputation and mortality. However, outcomes remain heterogeneous, influenced by socioeconomic factors, healthcare infrastructure and geographic disparities. Innovations in biologic therapies and precision diagnostics are refining risk stratification and therapeutic choices, while evidence-based guidelines continue to evolve to support limb salvage and functional restoration on a global scale.
