Summary

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated disorder characterised by demyelination and neurodegeneration, often leading to physical disability, cognitive impairment and reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Emerging evidence suggests that dietary factors can modulate inflammatory pathways, oxidative stress and gut microbiota composition, thereby influencing disease activity, symptom burden and overall wellbeing. Interventions ranging from broad dietary patterns—such as the Mediterranean diet, caloric restriction protocols and ketogenic regimens—to targeted nutrient supplementation (for example vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids and polyphenols) have been investigated for their potential to attenuate immune dysregulation and promote neural repair. Personalised dietary advice based on immunological biomarkers and digital health platforms is gaining traction as a means to enhance adherence and self-management. Collectively, these approaches hold promise not only for symptom alleviation and relapse reduction but also for improving psychological health, fatigue and functional capacity in people living with MS.
