Summary
The developing childhood years are a critical window in which dietary habits can shape short- and long-term health trajectories. Empirically derived dietary patterns—groupings of foods that reflect typical consumption behaviours—offer a holistic alternative to single-nutrient approaches. These patterns, identified by techniques such as principal component analysis or reduced-rank regression, range from “Western” or obesogenic profiles high in energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods, to “health-conscious” profiles rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. In early life, such patterns have been linked to growth, adiposity, cardiometabolic risk factors and even cognitive development. Socioeconomic and maternal influences often modulate children’s adherence, while dietary diversity supports nutrient adequacy. Longitudinal studies indicate moderate tracking of both beneficial and deleterious patterns from infancy into adolescence. Globally, interventions that incorporate maternal education, school-based nutrition programmes and regulation of ultra-processed marketing are emerging as key solutions. Understanding the interplay between dietary profiles and physiological markers in diverse settings underpins policy efforts to curb childhood obesity, metabolic disorders and associated health inequalities.
Research from Nature Portfolio
Building on this foundation, recent work from a New Zealand birth cohort has elucidated maternal determinants of early childhood dietary patterns. Using principal component analysis at three time-points (9, 24 and 54 months), two consistent profiles emerged: one characterised by high intake of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and another marked by refined, high-sugar, high-fat foods. Maternal behaviours—smoking, education level and antenatal dietary patterns—were strongly associated with children’s profile scores. Notably, maternal “health-conscious” diet scores predicted greater adherence to the fruit and vegetable pattern in offspring, whereas maternal smoking and lower educational attainment predicted higher refined pattern scores. These findings underscore the importance of maternal health behaviours in shaping children’s early diet and point to perinatal interventions to promote healthier eating trajectories.
