Summary

Colorectal cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer morbidity and mortality worldwide, and growing evidence emphasises that the overall configuration of the diet plays a critical role in modulating risk. Rather than focusing on individual foods or nutrients, research on dietary patterns examines habitual combinations of foods and beverages to capture synergistic effects on pathways involved in tumour initiation and progression. Broadly speaking, “health-promoting” patterns characterised by high intakes of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fish and unsaturated fats are consistently associated with lower incidence of colorectal neoplasia, whereas patterns rich in red and processed meats, refined grains, sugary beverages and saturated fats tend to elevate risk. Mechanistic studies have linked protective diets to reduced systemic inflammation, improved insulin sensitivity, favourable modulation of the intestinal microbiota and attenuation of carcinogenic processes such as DNA damage and aberrant cell proliferation. This line of enquiry has global significance: variations in diet quality and access to nutrient-dense foods contribute to disparities in colorectal cancer incidence between regions and socioeconomic groups. Translating these findings into public health recommendations and culturally appropriate dietary interventions offers a promising avenue for primary prevention and for complementing screening and treatment programmes.

Dietary pattern: A composite measure of habitual food and beverage intake that captures overall diet quality and interactions among different dietary components.

Hazard ratio (HR): A measure used in prospective studies to compare the rate of an event (such as cancer incidence) occurring in one group relative to another over time.
