Summary

Dietary protein plays a pivotal role in human metabolism, influencing body composition, energy balance and the regulation of blood glucose and lipids. Protein sources are broadly classified into animal-derived (meat, dairy, eggs) and plant-derived (legumes, nuts, grains), each conferring distinct amino acid profiles and bioactive compounds. Adequate protein intake supports muscle protein synthesis, satiety and thermogenesis, factors that contribute to weight management and the preservation of lean mass. Conversely, high intakes of animal protein—particularly from processed meats—have been linked to adverse cardiovascular and renal outcomes when consumed in excess. Plant proteins tend to be accompanied by fibre, phytochemicals and unsaturated fats, which collectively modulate gut microbiota, improve insulin sensitivity and attenuate systemic inflammation. Emerging evidence has delineated dose–response relationships for total and source-specific protein intakes in relation to all-cause and cause-specific mortality, type 2 diabetes risk and cardiometabolic markers. These findings carry global significance for dietary guidelines, emphasising the replacement of a proportion of animal protein with plant-based alternatives to promote metabolic health and reduce the burden of chronic disease.
