Differential parenting refers to systematic variations in the ways parents treat one child compared with another within the same family. Such variations can arise from parental preferences, perceptions of child temperament or ability, cultural norms and socioeconomic pressures. Differential treatment may involve differences in affection, discipline, expectations and material support. Research shows that these disparities contribute to divergent developmental trajectories in emotional regulation, self-esteem, behavioural adjustment and sibling relationships. Children who perceive themselves as favoured typically report higher attachment security and fewer internalising problems, whereas those who perceive unfavourable treatment often exhibit increased anxiety, depression and rivalry. Importantly, the impact of differential parenting is moderated by child characteristics (such as temperament, birth order and gender), by family context (including parental stress, partner support and cultural attitudes) and by the broader social environment. Understanding these dynamics is essential for designing effective parenting programmes, promoting equity among siblings and optimising psychosocial outcomes on a global scale.

A recent study published in Scientific Reports in 2022 examined first-born children in Chinese two-child families to investigate how children’s temperamental styles interact with parenting style to influence psychological adaptation. Using a large regional survey, researchers found that temperament characterised by approach or withdrawal tendencies was significantly linked to adjustment, and that authoritarian parenting partially mediated this link. Children displaying withdrawal tendencies experienced poorer adaptation when subjected to more authoritarian practices, highlighting the interplay between child-led and parent-led factors. This work underscores the need for interventions that tailor parental guidance to individual temperamental profiles, thereby mitigating potential adverse outcomes associated with differential treatment.
