One multi-state analysis of adult twins tracked transitions from employment through sickness absence to disability pension, revealing that concurrent back, neck or shoulder pain and common mental disorders markedly elevate the risk of both initial sickness absence and progression to disability pension. By comparing monozygotic and dizygotic twin pairs, researchers demonstrated that familial factors, including shared genetics and environment, confound these transitions, suggesting that individual susceptibility interacts with occupational exposures in shaping work incapacity trajectories.
