Disability Studies and Critical Education

Disability Studies and Critical Education represent an interdisciplinary field that interrogates traditional conceptions of disability and advocates for systemic transformation in educational settings. Emerging in the late twentieth century, Disability Studies shifted away from a deficit-oriented medical model, which locates disability in individual impairment, towards a social model that situates barriers within societal structures. Critical Education complements this perspective by emphasising the role of power, ideology and pedagogy in perpetuating exclusionary practices. Together, these approaches challenge educators and policymakers to reconceive curricula, teacher preparation and institutional policies in ways that foreground access, diversity and social justice. Central to this paradigm is the notion that disability constitutes a valued aspect of human difference rather than a condition to be corrected. Intersectional analyses further reveal how disability intersects with race, gender, language and class to compound marginalisation. Globally, scholars and practitioners have developed inclusive frameworks—such as Universal Design for Learning—to anticipate a wide range of learner needs, while critical methodologies expose entrenched ableism and advocate for community-centred, participatory approaches. Practical applications of this scholarship include collaborative curriculum design, disability-affirming teacher training and policy reforms that mandate accessible infrastructure and instructional materials. By fostering reflexivity among educators and empowering learners with disabilities, Disability Studies and Critical Education aim to cultivate equitable learning environments and transform dominant narratives about ability and participation.
