Drought Stress Adaptation Mechanisms in Crop Plants
Summary
Drought imposes a multifaceted challenge to global agriculture by constraining water availability, disrupting cellular homeostasis and curtailing photosynthetic carbon assimilation. In response, crop species deploy an integrated suite of morphological, physiological, biochemical and molecular strategies. Morphological adjustments include deeper or more extensive root systems and reduced leaf area to limit transpirational water loss. Physiological responses encompass stomatal closure mediated by abscisic acid signalling and maintenance of turgor via osmotic adjustment, achieved through the accumulation of compatible solutes. At the biochemical level, enhanced synthesis of antioxidant enzymes and osmoprotective metabolites mitigates oxidative damage and stabilises cellular structures. On the molecular front, stress‐responsive transcription factors and membrane‐transport proteins orchestrate gene networks that confer resilience, while advances in genomics, quantitative trait locus mapping and gene editing are accelerating the development of drought‐tolerant cultivars. Together, these adaptations form a robust framework for sustaining yield stability in water‐limited environments and underpin practical interventions ranging from microbial inoculation and foliar amendments to precision breeding and agronomic management.*

Drought Stress Adaptation Mechanisms in Crop Plants publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in drought stress adaptation mechanisms in crop plants across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Osmotic adjustment: Accumulation of soluble compounds within cells to maintain turgor under water deficit.
Water-use efficiency (WUE): Ratio of biomass or yield produced per unit of water consumed by the plant.
Reactive oxygen species (ROS): Highly reactive molecules generated under stress that can damage proteins, lipids and nucleic acids.
Antioxidant enzymes: Proteins such as catalase and peroxidases that detoxify ROS and protect cellular components.
Mycorrhizal fungi: Symbiotic soil fungi that enhance plant nutrient uptake and water absorption from the rhizosphere.
Abscisic acid (ABA): A plant hormone that regulates stomatal closure and gene expression in response to drought.
