Summary
Mineral dust aerosols, generated principally in arid and semi-arid regions, exert a multifaceted influence on climate by interacting directly with solar and terrestrial radiation and indirectly through cloud microphysics and biogeochemical cycles. Uplift processes such as surface winds and convective outflows entrain particles into the atmosphere, where transport pathways extend across continents and oceans. During atmospheric residence, dust alters the Earth’s radiative balance by scattering and absorbing sunlight, modulating surface temperatures and atmospheric stability. Deposited dust delivers essential nutrients to terrestrial and marine ecosystems, fertilising phytoplankton and influencing the global carbon cycle. Regional effects include modification of monsoon dynamics, suppression or enhancement of precipitation through ice-nucleating properties and feedbacks on large-scale circulation patterns. Despite advances in observational networks and modelling, uncertainties persist in quantifying the magnitude and spatial variability of radiative forcing, the efficiency of removal processes and the net climatic impact of interacting microphysical mechanisms. Improved datasets and novel reconstruction techniques are refining our understanding of source emissions, plume trajectories and deposition fluxes, with implications for climate projections and ecosystem management on a global scale.
