Dynamics of Political Change in the Arab World

The political landscape of the Arab world has undergone profound transformations since the early 2010s. Driven by socio‐economic precarity, demographic shifts and evolving communication networks, states have witnessed episodic mobilisations demanding greater accountability, participatory governance and equitable resource distribution. The interplay of local grievances and regional power dynamics has produced diverse trajectories, from incremental constitutional reforms to outright regime change. Monarchies and republics alike have adapted through a combination of elite bargaining, selective liberalisation and coercive strategies. External influences—ranging from economic conditionalities to military interventions—further complicate domestic reform processes. Scholarship emphasises the interdependence of formal institutions and informal practices, revealing how patronage systems and ideological discourses can both constrain and catalyse political change. This body of work highlights the need for integrated frameworks that account for state–society relations, resource dependencies and the resilience of established governance logics. The resulting insights carry global significance, informing efforts to support sustainable transitions and mitigate conflict in comparable contexts.

The research demonstrates that popular uprisings disrupt but ultimately reinforce prevailing governance logics, as reform agendas adapt to maintain continuity. This work offers a nuanced understanding of how hegemonic policy paradigms and local power configurations co‐evolve, shaping broader political dynamics in the region.
