Eagle Syndrome and Styloid Process Impacts on Vascular Health
Summary
Eagle syndrome arises from elongation of the styloid process or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament, leading to compression of adjacent neurovascular structures. While classical presentations involve throat pain, dysphagia and referred otalgia, vascular variants may impinge on the carotid artery or internal jugular vein. Arterial compression can precipitate transient ischaemic attacks or stroke, whereas venous impingement may provoke intracranial hypertension, headache, tinnitus and impaired cerebral drainage. The spatial orientation of the styloid projection, rather than its absolute length, has emerged as a critical determinant of vascular compromise. Diagnostic pathways centre on cross-sectional imaging, Doppler ultrasonography and three-dimensional reconstructions, guiding conservative management or surgical styloidectomy. Given its protean manifestations and under-recognition, Eagle syndrome warrants heightened awareness among neurologists, radiologists and vascular specialists to mitigate potentially serious cerebrovascular sequelae.
