Summary
Avian scavengers form a vital component of terrestrial ecosystems by mediating the removal and recycling of carrion, thereby regulating nutrient flows, limiting the spread of disease and influencing the structure of broader food webs. These birds range from obligate scavengers such as vultures, which depend almost entirely on carrion, to facultative scavengers that exploit a mixture of live prey and carcasses. Scavenger guilds are shaped by interspecific interactions, seasonal fluctuations in resource availability and the spatial configuration of habitats. At large scales, anthropogenic pressures—including habitat conversion, poisoning, persecution and food‐subsidy management—have altered scavenger behaviour, population dynamics and community composition. The loss or decline of key scavenger species can lead to cascading effects, such as greater persistence of carrion, changes in mesoscavenger populations and shifts in decomposition pathways. Conservation strategies now emphasise habitat protection, adaptive provisioning of safe food resources and integration of local ecological knowledge to sustain functional scavenger assemblages and the ecosystem services they deliver globally.

Recent studies have documented a marked decline in African savanna raptors over the past two to four decades, with nearly nine in ten species exhibiting population reductions that in many cases exceed international extinction‐risk thresholds. Larger raptors have declined more steeply than smaller counterparts, particularly outside formal protected areas, driving growing dependence on reserves. This work underscores the necessity of expanding protected land to at least 30% of terrestrial surfaces by 2030 and strengthening management in existing reserves to safeguard scavenger diversity, ecosystem functioning and climate resilience at a continental scale.
