Summary
Boreal caribou, a keystone species of northern ecosystems, occupy vast tracts of boreal forest interspersed with wetland and peatland habitats. Their persistence is governed by a delicate balance of vegetation structure, predator–prey dynamics and human land use. Natural disturbances such as fire and insect outbreaks historically created a mosaic of early‐ to late‐successional stands, providing lichen‐rich winter forage and dense canopy for calving refuge. However, contemporary industrial development—including roads, seismic lines and resource extraction—increases habitat fragmentation and alters predator movement corridors, amplifying predation risk by wolves and other carnivores. Climate warming further modifies snowpack dynamics and vegetation communities, shifting habitat suitability and forage availability. Conservation strategies now encompass multispecies models, adaptive management experiments and spatial planning to restore landscape connectivity, reduce predation pressure and enhance tree regeneration on linear clearings. These integrated approaches underscore the global significance of sustaining boreal caribou as indicators of intact northern forests and inform broader biodiversity and carbon‐sequestration objectives.
