Summary
Lizards and shrikes engage in a suite of ecological interactions that shape community structure, drive evolutionary adaptations and influence ecosystem functioning. Shrikes, small predatory passerines known for impaling prey on thorns or barbed vegetation, exert selective predation pressure on lizard populations. In turn, lizards display morphological defences such as cryptic coloration, spines or caudal autotomy, as well as behavioural strategies including habitat selection and temporal shifts in activity to evade avian predators. These predator–prey dynamics create spatial refuges and trophic cascades: lizard suppression of insect herbivores can be relaxed in the presence of high shrike densities, with consequences for vegetation and agricultural systems. Conversely, in human-modified landscapes, reduced avian predation may permit lizard population booms, altering substrate invertebrate communities. Shrikes also exhibit intraspecific behaviours—such as food caching and territoriality—that modulate prey availability and influence female condition, reproductive success and local community composition. Across diverse biomes, from temperate farmland to arid scrub, these interactions illustrate the reciprocal feedbacks between behaviour, morphology and ecosystem processes. Understanding this predator–prey nexus is essential for conservation management, as both shrikes and many lizard species face habitat loss, climate change and invasive species. Integrating knowledge of their interactions supports habitat restoration, biodiversity monitoring and the design of refuge corridors to maintain balanced trophic networks.
