Efficacy of Lavender Oil Preparations in Anxiety and Mood Disorders

Summary

Lavender oil preparations, particularly oral formulations derived from Lavandula angustifolia, have attracted considerable attention as potential treatments for anxiety and mood disorders. A growing body of clinical research demonstrates that standardised lavender oil capsules can produce meaningful reductions in anxiety symptoms across a spectrum of severity, from subthreshold presentations to diagnosed generalized anxiety disorder. Beyond anxiolytic effects, emerging evidence indicates concurrent improvements in sleep quality, somatic complaints and overall health-related quality of life. Recent investigations have also explored their antidepressant potential in mild-to-moderate major depressive disorder, suggesting benefits that parallel those of conventional pharmacotherapies but with a favourable tolerability profile. These findings underscore the global significance of lavender oil as an accessible, well-tolerated intervention that may complement existing therapeutic strategies and support early management of emotional distress.

Research from Nature Portfolio

A comprehensive network meta-analysis pooling multiple randomised, placebo-controlled trials has mapped the dose–response relationship of lavender oil capsules in adult patients with anxiety disorders. Higher daily doses (160 mg) achieved greater reductions in clinician-rated anxiety scale scores than lower doses (80 mg) and were comparable to standard anxiolytic agents, while preserving a benign adverse-event profile. Indirect comparisons further suggested equivalence with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in short-term symptom relief. These results provide robust quantitative evidence for the incorporation of standardised lavender oil formulations into clinical guidelines as an alternative or adjunct to pharmacological treatments.

The graph below shows the total number of articles in efficacy of lavender oil preparations in anxiety and mood disorders across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Anxiolytic effect: Reduction of anxiety symptoms, typically assessed by validated clinical scales.

Network meta-analysis: Statistical technique enabling simultaneous comparison of multiple treatments by integrating direct and indirect evidence from different trials.

Randomized controlled trial (RCT): Experimental design in which participants are randomly assigned to intervention or control groups to minimise bias.

Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A): Clinician-rated instrument measuring the severity of anxiety symptoms across psychic and somatic domains.

Montgomery Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS): Clinician-rated scale used to quantify the intensity of depressive symptoms and monitor change over time.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Diagnostic category characterised by pervasive, excessive worry and associated physical symptoms.

Silexan: Proprietary oral formulation of lavender essential oil standardised for consistent therapeutic application.
