Summary

Employee stress dynamics encompass the complex interplay between situational demands, individual appraisal processes and the resources available to meet work requirements. Contemporary models distinguish between job demands that challenge growth and performance and those that hinder progress and well‐being. The challenge–hindrance framework posits that certain pressures can enhance motivation, learning and innovation, while other constraints provoke strain, burnout and turnover. The job demands–resources model integrates these perspectives by emphasising that resources such as autonomy, social support and skill variety buffer the impact of high demands on health and performance. Recent advances have adopted intensive longitudinal methods and digital biomarkers to capture stress fluctuations in real time, revealing how micro‐level variations in workload, interruptions and emotional labour translate into physiological and cognitive responses. Network and systems analyses have begun to map the dynamic feedback loops between appraisal, affect and job performance, offering a more nuanced account of when and why particular demands become detrimental. This evolving evidence base underpins practical interventions—from redesigning task boundaries to deploying wearable monitors—that aim to optimise employee resilience and organisational effectiveness on a global scale.
