Enamel Coatings for Corrosion and Abrasion Resistance in Steel Applications

Summary

Enamel coatings, often composed of borosilicate or feldspathic glass, form a durable inorganic barrier on steel substrates. These coatings are applied as a slurry and fused at high temperature to create a continuous, impermeable layer. The resulting composite structure combines the strength and toughness of steel with the chemical inertness and hardness of glass. Enamelled steel finds widespread use in chemical processing, infrastructure exposed to saline environments, heavy machinery and architectural panels, where both corrosion and mechanical wear are pressing concerns. Key performance attributes include exceptional resistance to acidic and alkaline media, a high barrier effect against moisture ingress and excellent wear resistance under sliding or abrasive contacts. Optimising the glass composition, particle size of fillers and firing parameters allows control of thermal expansion mismatch, adhesion strength and surface morphology. Advances in low-temperature sintering and local repair techniques have further broadened the applicability of enamel coatings, reducing energy consumption and enabling in-field maintenance of complex assemblies. Overall, enamelled steel presents a cost-effective solution for extending service life in demanding operating environments worldwide.

Enamel Coatings for Corrosion and Abrasion Resistance in Steel Applications publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in enamel coatings for corrosion and abrasion resistance in steel applications across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Vitreous enamel: A glassy coating formed by firing powdered glass onto a metal surface, resulting in a hard, fused layer.

Coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE): A measure of how much a material expands or contracts with temperature change, critical for matching enamel to steel.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS): A technique that applies a small alternating current to a coated metal to characterise corrosion resistance and barrier integrity.

Sintering: The process of heating powdered materials below their melting point to achieve bonding and densification, often used in enamel firing.
