Summary
Enset (Ensete ventricosum) is a perennial, banana‐related staple cultivated exclusively in the southern Ethiopian highlands, where it underpins the livelihoods and food security of over 20 million people. Its unique biology combines a flexible planting and harvest calendar, tolerance of drought and a wide range of altitudes, and the capacity to store carbohydrates in both pseudostem and corm for months or years. Over centuries, farmers have selected and maintained hundreds of locally adapted landraces distinguished by morphology, cooking quality and disease resistance. These landraces are maintained in complex homegarden systems alongside cereals, pulses, root crops and coffee, forming mixed subsistence farms that buffer households against seasonal shortages and external shocks. Enset processing yields three main products—kocho, bulla and amicho—each with distinct nutritional profiles and cultural significance. Genetic studies reveal that clonal propagation has maintained high levels of heterozygosity, while also risk-mitigating pathogen and environmental challenges. Traditional agro-ecological knowledge guides the on-farm conservation of diversity, yet this system faces mounting threats from Xanthomonas wilt, pressure on landholdings and socio-economic change. Current research emphasises integrating farmer knowledge with genomic tools to characterise diversity, improve disease resistance and support resilient agri-food systems. The global significance of enset lies in its potential as a model for drought-resilient, perennial staple crops and its capacity to inform sustainable agriculture under climatic uncertainty.
