Environmental Exposure and Childhood Cancer Risk

Summary

Childhood cancer arises from a complex interplay of inherited susceptibility and environmental insults occurring during critical windows of development. Exposures to chemical agents such as benzene, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and particulate matter; physical stressors including ionising radiation and extremely low-frequency magnetic fields; and emerging concerns over endocrine-disrupting compounds have all been implicated in initiating or promoting malignant transformation of immature cells. The prenatal period and early postnatal years represent heightened vulnerability, owing to rapid cell division, organogenesis and immature detoxification pathways. Mechanistic research has begun to elucidate how genotoxic adduct formation, oxidative stress and epigenetic reprogramming may underlie observed associations, while spatial analysis and biomonitoring techniques improve precision in exposure assessment. Globally, disparities in regulation, agricultural practice and urban pollution contribute to uneven burdens of childhood malignancy, highlighting the need for harmonised surveillance and prevention strategies. Translation of epidemiological findings into public health action—such as buffer zones around agricultural land or petrol stations, tighter air quality standards and reduced residential pesticide use—offers realistic pathways to reduce the incidence of leukaemia, brain tumours and other paediatric cancers. Interdisciplinary collaboration between toxicologists, epidemiologists, clinicians and policymakers is essential to refine exposure metrics, identify high-risk populations and develop targeted interventions.
