Summary

Malaria remains a major global health challenge, with over 200 million cases and hundreds of thousands of deaths each year, predominantly in sub-Saharan Africa. The disease is caused by Plasmodium parasites transmitted through the bites of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. Control strategies combine vector management—such as insecticide-treated nets and indoor residual spraying—with prompt diagnosis via rapid diagnostic tests and effective treatment using artemisinin-based combination therapies. Surveillance systems stratify regions by transmission intensity, enabling targeted interventions and efficient resource allocation. Emerging threats—including parasite resistance to antimalarial drugs, mosquito resistance to insecticides and climate-driven shifts in vector ecology—demand adaptive approaches. Human mobility and cross-border movements further complicate elimination efforts by facilitating parasite importation. Integrated strategies that harness novel technologies, community engagement and regional collaboration are essential to sustain progress towards global malaria elimination.
