Summary

Gliomas are primary brain tumours arising from glial cells and represent a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Incidence varies by geographic region, age group and sex, with higher rates typically observed in North America and Europe and in older adults. While high‐dose ionising radiation and rare genetic syndromes account for a small fraction of cases, modifiable lifestyle factors have been intensively investigated. Among these, diet has emerged as a potential influence on risk, with research focusing on overall dietary patterns rather than single nutrients. Evidence suggests that diets rich in fruits, vegetables, plant‐based fibres and certain proteins may confer protection, whereas Westernised diets high in processed meats and refined carbohydrates might increase predisposition. Mechanistic hypotheses include modulation of oxidative stress, inflammation and cellular proliferation via bioactive compounds, antioxidants and pro‐inflammatory mediators. Methodological challenges—such as recall bias in retrospective studies, heterogeneity of dietary assessment tools and confounding by socioeconomic factors—have driven a shift towards large prospective cohorts and pooled analyses. Improved characterisation of diet–gene interactions and culturally tailored dietary indices promises to refine our understanding of how nutrition can contribute to glioma prevention strategies on a global scale.

Dietary Antioxidant Index (DAI): A composite score reflecting the antioxidant capacity of the diet, based on key vitamins and phytonutrients.
