Summary

Staphylococcus aureus remains a leading cause of both community‐ and healthcare‐associated infections worldwide, driven by its capacity for asymptomatic colonization, rapid acquisition of antimicrobial resistance and diverse virulence factors. Nasal carriage often precedes skin and soft tissue infections, while invasive disease may follow breaches of the skin or mucosal barriers. Methicillin‐resistant S. aureus (MRSA) has emerged as a dominant public health challenge, with distinct lineages circulating in hospitals, the community and animal reservoirs. Management relies on a combination of targeted antimicrobial therapy guided by susceptibility testing, decolonization regimens and rigorous infection‐control measures. Environmental reservoirs, fomites and close contacts are increasingly recognised as sources of transmission, highlighting the need for integrated “One Health” approaches. Recent advances in immunoprofiling, high‐resolution genomic surveillance and risk stratification have informed tailored prevention strategies and renewed interest in vaccine development. Despite these gains, rising resistance to last‐line agents and the pathogen’s adaptability underscore the urgency of coordinated stewardship, novel therapeutics and global surveillance networks to curb morbidity and mortality.
