Summary
China now accounts for the largest population affected by type 2 diabetes worldwide, with prevalence rising steeply over the past four decades. Rapid urbanisation, changes in dietary patterns towards energy-dense foods, sedentary lifestyles and an ageing demographic have driven a parallel surge in obesity and insulin resistance. Environmental exposures such as air pollution and endocrine-disrupting chemicals may further amplify risk. Despite efforts to implement population-level prevention—through community health programmes and routine screening—a substantial proportion of cases remains undiagnosed, particularly in rural regions and among lower-income groups.
Clinical management has progressed through national guidelines that promote an integrated approach combining medical nutrition therapy, structured exercise programmes and pharmacotherapy tailored to individual risk profiles. First-line agents such as metformin and newer classes including GLP-1 receptor agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors are increasingly adopted alongside basal insulin regimens for patients with inadequate glycaemic control. Digital health platforms and mobile applications have emerged to support self-management, education and remote monitoring, facilitating tighter blood glucose targets and improved patient engagement. Nevertheless, regional disparities in healthcare access, variations in clinician training and patient adherence continue to challenge the consistent delivery of optimal care.
