Summary
Epilepsy is a chronic neurological condition characterised by recurrent seizures that can profoundly affect daily functioning, emotional well-being and social participation. Self-management interventions seek to empower individuals with epilepsy to monitor their condition, adhere to medication regimens, recognise and avoid seizure triggers, and employ coping strategies to manage psychological comorbidities. Such interventions range from structured face-to-face group programmes and digital platforms to telephone-based support and mindfulness training. By enhancing knowledge, self-efficacy and behavioural skills, these approaches aim to reduce seizure frequency, minimise negative health events and improve overall quality of life. The global burden of epilepsy, compounded by treatment gaps in underserved communities, has driven the development of culturally adapted and technology-enabled models. Despite encouraging signals of benefit, variation in programme content, delivery formats and outcome measures underscores the need for standardised frameworks and long-term evaluations to establish sustained gains in health-related quality of life.
