Summary

The nineteenth century witnessed a complex entanglement of occult traditions and emergent scientific paradigms, as scholars, practitioners and lay audiences negotiated the boundaries between materialist inquiry and hidden or spiritual knowledge. Esoteric currents—from spiritualism and mesmerism to natural theology and occult chemistry—were never wholly marginal to scientific culture but rather informed experimental practices, institutional debates and public receptions of new theories. Leading figures such as William Crookes, Alfred Russel Wallace and Oliver Lodge engaged in psychical research to probe phenomena that conventional laboratories found inexplicable, while critics deployed boundary-work to distance legitimate science from intangible forces. Hypnotism, dietary cults, mediumship and séances became arenas in which credibility was contested and redefined. At the same time, broader processes of disenchantment were tempered by aesthetic and theological commitments, as scientists continued to invoke design arguments or aesthetic sensibilities in the study of nature. International networks—from transatlantic psychical societies to translation of research in China—underscored the global reach of these debates. By the century’s close, the uneasy co-presence of esotericism and science had shaped not only the institutions of psychology, medicine and theology, but also the cultural imagination of modernity.

Hypnotism: A practice of inducing a trance-like state to explore suggestibility, consciousness and therapeutic potential, closely linked to mesmerism.
