Essential Oil Composition and Biological Activities of Pimpinella Species

Summary

The genus Pimpinella comprises more than 150 species of aromatic plants widely distributed across Europe, Asia and parts of Africa. Essential oils obtained from seeds, fruits and aerial parts are characterised by a complex mixture of volatile compounds, notably phenylpropanoids such as trans-anethole, monoterpenes like limonene and sesquiterpenes. Composition varies markedly between species, geographical origins and developmental stages, yielding distinct chemotypes. These essential oils exhibit diverse biological activities, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. In vitro assays demonstrate potent inhibition of bacterial and fungal pathogens, while cellular and animal studies reveal free-radical scavenging, modulation of inflammatory mediators and protection against neuronal damage. Emerging evidence suggests potential applications in nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals and as leads for novel pharmacological agents, underpinned by traditional uses in gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory conditions and as general health tonics.

Essential Oil Composition and Biological Activities of Pimpinella Species publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in essential oil composition and biological activities of pimpinella species across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Essential oil: A complex mixture of volatile organic compounds extracted from plant material, prized for aroma and bioactivity.

Trans-anethole: A phenylpropanoid responsible for the characteristic sweet aroma of anise and a major bioactive constituent in many Pimpinella oils.

Coumarin: A benzopyrone compound found in certain Pimpinella species, noted for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Chemotype: A classification of a plant population based on the dominance of particular chemical constituents in its essential oil.
