Evidence-Based Practice in Health Education
Summary
Evidence-based practice (EBP) in health education is founded on the systematic integration of the most rigorous research evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences. Central to EBP is a five-step process encompassing the formulation of clear, answerable questions; the efficient retrieval of relevant studies; the critical appraisal of methodological quality; the application of findings to real-world settings; and the evaluation of outcomes to inform continuous improvement. Embedding EBP within curricula across medicine, nursing, physiotherapy and allied health disciplines ensures that emerging professionals develop the analytical skills required to translate knowledge into effective, patient-centred care. Recent advances in mobile applications, interactive decision tools and online learning platforms have expanded access to pedagogical resources, enabling flexible, practice-oriented instruction. Despite broad consensus on EBP’s value, barriers such as limited training time, variable access to information resources and deficits in appraisal skills persist, prompting sustained efforts to refine instructional strategies and measurement instruments at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Research from Nature Portfolio
Recent large-scale surveys of physiotherapists across Latin America reveal broadly positive beliefs and attitudes towards EBP, with practitioners demonstrating sound knowledge and a willingness to integrate evidence into clinical decision-making. Key factors associated with higher use of EBP included formal education level and specific training in research methods. However, insufficient time, lack of resource access and limited research tools remain the principal barriers. These findings underscore the need for regional strategies that bolster resource availability and embed EBP competencies within professional development frameworks.
