Summary

The Neotropical cichlids represent one of the most diverse and ecologically significant lineages of freshwater fishes, exhibiting an extraordinary range of morphological, behavioural and genomic adaptations. Their evolutionary dynamics have been shaped by complex interactions among historical geoclimatic events, ecological opportunity and intrinsic developmental pathways. Within South and Central America, episodes of Andean uplift, river captures and fluctuating palaeoclimates have driven repeated vicariance and secondary contact, fostering both allopatric speciation and convergent adaptation. Adaptive radiation in distinct riverine and lacustrine systems has produced a multiplicity of ecomorphs, each finely tuned to niches ranging from benthic foraging on invertebrates to pelagic piscivory. Recent phylogenetic frameworks, enabled by multilocus and phylogenomic datasets, have resolved major clades such as the Heroini, Geophagini and Cichlasomatini, revealing patterns of rapid early divergence followed by sustained morphological evolution.
